Many fleets have maintenance misconceptions, believing that short distance loads and low vehicle wear can simplify the maintenance process. In fact, compared with long-distance constant speed transportation, the working conditions of short distance high-frequency operations are more severe. The vehicle is in a state of cold start, low-temperature operation, and frequent start stop for a long time. The engine, battery, brake, and chassis components are prone to chronic premature aging, which is also the core reason for the high failure rate and short service life of short distance trucks. Implementing precise maintenance for exclusive working conditions for short distance operations can effectively avoid various hidden faults and reduce fleet operation and maintenance costs.
The engine is the most severely damaged core component during short distance operations. Short distance driving and low vehicle speed make it difficult for the engine to reach the standard operating temperature. Long term low-temperature operation can lead to insufficient fuel atomization and incomplete combustion, which can easily accumulate a large amount of carbon deposits in the fuel injectors, pistons, and intake ducts. Over time, problems such as weak power, increased fuel consumption, and idle shaking may occur. At the same time, if the engine oil is in a state of alternating cold and hot for a long time, it is easy to breed oil sludge, reduce lubrication performance, and increase dry wear and tear of components at the moment of start-up. Short distance truck maintenance should focus on shortening the oil and diesel filter replacement cycle to avoid oil deterioration and failure. At the same time, regular cleaning of engine carbon deposits should be carried out to prevent chronic damage caused by low-temperature working conditions.
Battery depletion and damage are common problems in short distance high-frequency operations. The truck consumes a large amount of instantaneous current every time it starts, and the short distance travel time makes it impossible for the generator's charging capacity to compensate for the starting power consumption, resulting in the battery being in a long-term state of "deficit". Repeated shallow battery depletion can cause sulfurization of battery plates, decreased storage capacity, weak starting, static battery depletion, premature scrapping, and other problems. The frequency of battery replacement for short distance vehicles is much higher than that for long-distance vehicles. Daily maintenance requires regular recharging of the battery, and long-term operation can increase the idle charging time appropriately to avoid long-term battery fatigue and prolong the service life of the battery.

The exclusive wear and tear of the braking system cannot be ignored. Short distance operations are mainly characterized by frequent low-speed start stop, with extremely high frequency of brake use. The brake shoes and brake drums are repeatedly rubbed against each other for a long time, and the heat continues to accumulate and cannot be quickly dissipated, which can easily cause brake thermal fatigue, resulting in brake pad wear, wheel hub overheating, brake return lag and other faults. At the same time, there is a lot of dust and sediment during short distance operations in construction sites and factory areas, which can easily enter the brake gaps and exacerbate the wear of brake components. Regularly clean the dust and impurities in the brake system, check the brake clearance and cylinder return status, replace worn brake parts in a timely manner, and eliminate safety hazards such as brake drag and failure.
The chassis suspension and transmission components require targeted protection. Short distance bumpy road conditions often result in significant start stop impacts. Steel plate springs, balance shaft rubber sleeves, and shock absorbers continue to bear alternating loads without a constant speed buffering process, which can easily lead to problems such as rubber sleeve aging and looseness, increased chassis clearance, and abnormal driving noise. At the same time, the cross axis of the transmission shaft frequently experiences torque during start stop moments, resulting in a significantly accelerated wear rate. During maintenance, it is necessary to regularly add lubricating grease to the chassis suspension and transmission components, tighten loose screws on the chassis, and replace aging rubber sleeves in a timely manner to avoid joint failures such as chassis looseness, abnormal noise, and deviation.
Compared to long-distance vehicles, short distance high-frequency operation trucks do not require complex major repairs and maintenance, but they must abandon the extensive maintenance mode. Persist in preheating the refrigeration unit before carrying heavy loads, and avoid using vehicles with low temperature violence; Shorten the maintenance cycle of vulnerable parts as needed and provide targeted maintenance for high-frequency wear and tear components; Regularly inspect the chassis, brakes, and electrical hazards. Implementing short distance exclusive maintenance standards can effectively avoid premature aging of vehicles, significantly reduce failure rates, stabilize vehicle attendance rates, and help overseas fleets operate efficiently and cost effectively.
