The core function of air filtration is to filter out dust, dirt, and impurities in the air, providing clean intake for the engine. Heavy trucks are often used in dusty and complex working conditions such as construction sites, mining areas, and mountainous areas, where the intake environment is harsh and the air filter load is extremely high. Many drivers believe that the cleaner the air filter, the better. They frequently use high-pressure air guns to blow in reverse and even wash and dry it repeatedly. This operation will directly open the pores of the filter paper fibers and damage the original filtration accuracy. The seemingly refreshed air filter is actually unable to intercept fine dust. A large amount of dust entering the cylinder can cause continuous dry wear of precision components such as pistons, cylinder liners, and valves, resulting in irreversible hidden wear. Long term use can directly shorten the engine overhaul cycle.

On the contrary, if the air filter is not replaced or cleaned for a long time, it will also cause various working condition failures. Excessive accumulation of dust on the surface of the air filter can block the intake pores, resulting in insufficient intake volume, imbalanced air-fuel ratio of the engine, insufficient fuel combustion, and the production of a large amount of carbon deposits, leading to problems such as clogged fuel injectors, idle shaking, weak climbing ability, and abnormal fuel consumption. When severely blocked, it can also cause excessive negative pressure in the intake, breakdown of the filter paper, and direct entry of impurities into the engine, leading to severe mechanical wear and significantly increasing maintenance costs.
Many fleets overlook a core common sense: the air filter with slight dust accumulation has the best filtering effect. The brand new air filter paper is smooth and porous, lacking a dust adsorption layer, and has weak interception ability for fine impurities in the initial stage. After a period of normal use, a thin layer of dust adheres to the surface of the filter element, forming a natural filtering buffer layer that accurately blocks fine sand and dust. The filtering accuracy is much higher than that of a brand new air filter and an air filter after excessive blowing. Blindly pursuing a dust-free state can significantly reduce protection capabilities and exacerbate hidden engine losses.
Differentiated scientific maintenance methods need to be implemented for different working conditions. For vehicles operating in dusty construction sites and mining areas, it is recommended to regularly and gently blow the floating dust on the surface of the filter element with low pressure. High pressure reverse blowing is prohibited to avoid damaging the filter paper structure; Vehicles on long-distance routes with good road conditions can be replaced according to the original factory cycle without frequent cleaning. At the same time, it is necessary to prevent water washing and air filtration. When the filter paper becomes damp, it will deform, clog the pores, and cause filtration failure, which can easily lead to poor air intake and engine dust return. In addition, it is necessary to regularly check the sealing of the air filter gasket. Aging and leakage of the gasket can cause unfiltered air to directly enter the engine, resulting in unprotected wear and tear.
For overseas heavy-duty truck fleets, implicit engine wear is a progressive disease, with no obvious symptoms in the early stages. Once problems such as shaking, oil burning, and power degradation occur, the wear and tear cannot be reversed.
