Many overseas regions have entered the rainy season, and continuous rainfall and muddy and waterlogged roads will subject the chassis wiring harness of heavy trucks to long-term erosion by rainwater and immersion in mud and water. Many fleets focus on rainy season protection for engines and braking systems, but neglect vehicle wiring harnesses. Damage to the outer skin of the wiring harness and moisture ingress of the plug can easily cause short circuits in the circuit, electrical malfunctions, such as lights turning off, instrument errors, and starter failure. In severe cases, it can even burn the entire vehicle circuit, causing the vehicle to stop halfway and resulting in high maintenance and shutdown losses. Mastering the key points of wire harness protection during the rainy season, identifying potential hazards in advance, can effectively reduce the risk of circuit failures and ensure stable vehicle operation.
Prioritize completing the appearance and connector inspection of the wiring harness before driving. Focus on inspecting the wiring harness near the chassis, frame sides, and axles, and observe whether the outer rubber sheath is cracked, worn, aged, or detached. The vehicle experiences long-term bumps and friction, and if the protective sheath is damaged, mud and water will directly enter the internal copper wire. Various electrical plugs are prone to water ingress. Check for missing or cracked sealing rings on the plugs and for cracks on the plug casing. Once white green rust and water stains are found on the plug, it indicates that it has been dampened and should be cleaned and dried in a timely manner. If necessary, the sealing gasket should be replaced to prevent continuous rainwater infiltration.
Be cautious when passing through flooded roads and reduce soaking of wiring harnesses. When encountering a deep water surface, do not forcefully pass through quickly. When the water level is below the chassis harness area, high-speed splashing will cause a large amount of mud and water to pour into the plug gap, and the sediment will adhere to the surface of the harness, making it difficult to clean. After wading through water, do not immediately turn off the engine and stop it. Keep the engine idling for a period of time, use the vehicle's own temperature to dry some of the water vapor, and check the chassis harness joints in a timely manner after stopping the vehicle to clean any attached mud.
Ensure proper sealing and protection of the wiring harness to delay aging and damage. For the exposed wiring harness of the chassis, wear-resistant corrugated pipes can be installed for protection, reducing the impact of gravel and direct erosion by mud and water. The plug position can use specialized waterproof protective grease to isolate moisture and slow down the oxidation and corrosion of metal pins. Please note that do not use ordinary sealant to directly seal the plug, as it is difficult to disassemble during later maintenance and may cause water vapor to seal inside, accelerating corrosion.
Clean and inspect in a timely manner after rain to prevent hidden corrosion. After driving during the rainy season, soil will accumulate in the gaps of the wire harness, and residual salt will remain after the mud and water dry, continuously corroding the outer skin and metal terminals of the wire harness. If possible, the chassis wiring harness area can be rinsed with low-pressure water and fully dried after rinsing. Simultaneously test electrical equipment such as lighting, wipers, and solenoid valves to detect minor issues such as poor circuit connections in advance.
Most faults in heavy-duty truck wiring harnesses are caused by long-term erosion from mud and water. Due to limited maintenance resources for overseas construction sites and cross-border transportation environments, insisting on pre inspection of wiring harnesses, water protection, and post rain cleaning during the rainy season can reduce sudden failures such as short circuits and electrical failures, lower fleet operation and maintenance costs, and ensure driving safety and vehicle attendance during the rainy season.
