In overseas long-distance trunk lines and heavy-duty transportation scenarios on construction sites, overheating and scalding of heavy-duty truck wheels are common high-frequency faults. Many drivers find that the wheel hub is hot on their hands after driving, and if there is no obvious locking or smoking phenomenon, they choose to ignore it. Little do they know that long-term high-temperature operation of the wheel hub can accelerate bearing wear, grease failure, and in severe cases, cause major safety accidents such as wheel hub locking, tire fire, and high-speed tire blowouts. The causes of wheel hub overheating can be divided into four categories: driving operation, brake failure, chassis tuning, and improper maintenance. Most problems do not require replacement of large parts, and can be quickly solved by identifying the cause and handling it in a timely manner, effectively avoiding driving hazards and reducing operation and maintenance costs. Brake drag is the primary and most common cause of wheel hub overheating. Poor brake return, stuck cylinder, small brake shoe clearance, and untimely drainage of the air reservoir can all cause the brakes to be in a slight semi braking state, resulting in continuous friction and heating during driving, causing a surge in wheel hub temperature. At the initial stage of this type of malfunction, there are no obvious symptoms of brake failure. It only manifests as hot wheels and slight fuel consumption of the vehicle. Long term driving can accelerate brake pad wear and even lead to brake thermal attenuation. Daily handling can focus on checking the brake clearance, cleaning impurities in the brake cylinder, regularly draining the accumulated water in the air reservoir, ensuring complete brake return, and eliminating dragging and heating problems. Abnormal wheel hub bearings are the key mechanical faults that cause overheating. Improper adjustment of bearing tightness, lack of lubricating grease, deterioration of grease and water ingress, and loose bearing wear can all lead to metal friction heating during driving. Tight bearings can cause continuous compression friction, while loose bearings can cause clearance shaking and abnormal wear, both of which can quickly generate high temperatures. During maintenance, it is necessary to add high-temperature resistant special lubricating grease in a standardized manner, eliminate inferior grease, accurately adjust the bearing clearance, replace parts in a timely manner if there is severe wear, and avoid bearing locking and damaging the wheel hub assembly. Heavy load conditions and poor driving habits can exacerbate wheel hub heating. Overloading and unbalanced transportation are common on overseas construction sites, and excessive vehicle loads can cause wheel hub bearings and braking systems to work under long-term overload, resulting in a significant increase in heat dissipation pressure. Frequent braking and prolonged sliding with brakes on long downhill slopes can lead to continuous accumulation of braking heat, which cannot be dissipated in a timely manner and can cause high temperatures in the wheel hub in a short period of time.In daily driving, it is necessary to prevent overloading and uneven loading. For long downhill slopes, priority should be given to using water spray cooling and auxiliary braking to reduce frequent foot pedal braking and lower the probability of wheel hub heating from an operational perspective. Abnormal tires and chassis can also induce overheating of the wheel hub, abnormal tire pressure, and uneven tire wear can change the driving resistance of the wheels and increase the operating load of the wheel hub; Chassis wheelbase deviation, axle displacement, and uneven suspension force can cause the wheels to travel and experience friction, resulting in continuous heat generation. In addition, uneven tightness of wheel hub screws can cause unstable wheel rim fit, slight shaking and friction during driving, resulting in local high temperatures. Daily pre inspection requires calibration of tire pressure, tightening of wheel hub screws, and regular calibration of chassis data to ensure smooth wheel operation. In the maintenance of overseas fleets, it is important not to overlook minor wheel overheating issues. High temperatures not only damage the wheels, bearings, and tires, but also significantly increase driving risks. It is necessary to conduct pre inspection, driving observation, and re inspection of the vehicle on a daily basis, accurately investigate the four dimensions of braking, bearings, chassis, and operating habits, and promptly handle minor faults. Scientific maintenance and targeted repair can not only extend the service life of wheel hubs and walking system accessories, reduce maintenance costs, but also comprehensively improve the safety and stability of heavy-duty truck operation.
