The heavy-duty truck pneumatic system relies on compressed air to achieve functions such as braking, clutch, and differential lock. Many fleets only focus on braking performance, but have long ignored the problem of water accumulation in the air reservoir. The accumulation of water in the gas storage cylinder is a chronic hazard, and there is no obvious malfunction light in the initial stage, which does not affect normal driving and is easily overlooked. However, long-term accumulation of accumulated water will gradually erode the entire valve body, pipeline, and sealing components of the air circuit, causing a series of failures such as brake failure, premature aging of components, and vehicle torque limitation. It is one of the main causes of frequent vehicle failures in rainy and high humidity areas overseas.
The most direct harm of water accumulation is that it causes slow braking response and weak braking. High water content in compressed air can occupy the effective volume of the air storage cylinder, resulting in slow establishment of storage pressure and insufficient gas supply. When driving downhill with heavy loads and continuous braking, the air pressure supply cannot keep up, resulting in problems such as weak braking, longer stopping distance, and delayed braking response, which seriously affect driving safety. Especially in mountainous transportation conditions, frequent use of gas can amplify braking defects caused by water accumulation, which can easily lead to safety accidents.
Long term accumulation of water can corrode the valve body of the gas circuit, causing the valve body to become stuck and leak air. Moisture mixed with impurities in the air can cause oxidation and corrosion inside the relay valve, dryer, four circuit protection valve, and brake master cylinder, leading to valve core movement jamming and sealing surface wear. The vehicle may experience problems such as slow parking return, brake dragging, slight air leakage, and rapid air pressure drop. The valve body is a precision accessory, and once corroded or damaged, it can only be replaced as a whole, resulting in high maintenance costs.
Accumulated water will accelerate the aging and failure of rubber seals. The sealing ring, cup, and membrane inside the gas path may experience premature aging such as swelling, hardening, deformation, and cracking due to long-term contact with accumulated water and impurities, resulting in poor sealing of the gas path and slight air leakage in multiple areas. Many vehicles frequently replace their air seals and still experience repeated air leaks. The root cause is that the air reservoir has not been drained for a long time, and the humid environment of the air path has not been improved.
Low temperatures in winter can easily cause gas path icing and blockage. In areas with large temperature differences between day and night or low temperatures, residual water in the air storage cylinder can freeze, blocking the pipeline and valve body air holes, directly causing serious faults such as brake lock, inability to release parking, and lack of air pressure, resulting in the vehicle getting stuck halfway and seriously affecting the efficiency of the fleet.
At the same time, water accumulation will accelerate the corrosion inside the gas storage cylinder, shortening its service life. Long term accumulation of water will cause extensive rusting and peeling of the inner wall of the cylinder, and rust particles will enter the entire vehicle's air path with the airflow, continuously wearing down the valve body and pipelines, forming a vicious cycle of "water accumulation rust valve jamming air leakage".
Overall, the accumulation of water in the air reservoir may seem like a minor issue, but it actually poses a threat to the safety of the entire vehicle's braking system. Overseas fleets need to develop regular drainage habits, check the working status of dryers, promptly replace faulty drying cylinders, keep the air path dry and clean, effectively reduce the probability of air path failures, and reduce vehicle downtime and maintenance costs.
