The rear axle of heavy-duty trucks, as the core component for carrying loads and transmitting power, relies on gear oil for lubrication, cooling, and rust prevention during long-term heavy load driving. Overseas mining areas and cross-border mainline fleets often encounter faults such as gear tooth damage, bearing burnout, and differential damage, most of which are caused by the deterioration of gear oil and failure to replace it. There are few overseas maintenance stations, and once the rear axle is damaged, the maintenance cycle is long and the loss is huge. Mastering the method of identifying the timing of gear oil replacement without professional equipment can effectively avoid the problem of rear axle overhaul. The judgment of whether the rear axle gear oil should be replaced can be divided into three methods: visual observation, tactile detection, and driving condition judgment. Firstly, the oil should be drained and visually observed for color and impurities. Unscrew the rear axle oil drain screw to release a small amount of gear oil. The new rear axle gear oil should be transparent, light brown or amber in texture, and clear and transparent. If the color of the released oil changes to dark brown or dark black, it indicates that the oil has been severely oxidized and failed. If the oil is mixed with metal debris, black powder, and white emulsified flocs inside, it means that the gear oil has lost its lubrication performance. The metal powder is caused by wear and tear of the rear axle gears and bearings, and the emulsified white color is caused by water ingress and dampness of the rear axle oil seal. In both cases, the gear oil must be replaced immediately and the water ingress fault must be investigated. Secondly, use your fingers to rub and feel the texture of the oil. Dip a small amount of gear oil into your fingertips and rub it back and forth. Qualified gear oil is smooth, viscous, and has a normal oil film pulling sensation. Deteriorated gear oil can have two states: first, the oil becomes thin like water without viscosity, and cannot form an effective lubricating oil film under high temperature conditions, which can easily cause dry wear and damage to the gear. Second, the oil clumps, becomes sticky, and contains fine hard particles. The particles will accelerate the wear of the rear axle gear meshing surface. As long as there is any one of these conditions, such as thinness, clumping, or impurities, the oil should be changed in a timely manner. Relying on driving performance to judge is also a common and simple method used by fleets. During heavy load climbing and turning, the rear axle continuously emits dull buzzing and abnormal noises, as well as gear biting and clicking sounds. The abnormal noise of the rear axle is significantly aggravated when reversing at low speeds. After ruling out the problem of excessive gear clearance, it is basically caused by the deterioration and insufficient lubrication of the gear oil. In addition, in winter, when starting a cold car, the operation of the rear axle is rough and the noise is huge. After driving for more than ten kilometers and heating up, the abnormal noise is slightly reduced, which is also a typical feature of the aging and viscosity failure of the gear oil. Some vehicles have abnormally high rear axle temperatures, and touching the rear axle shell while parked also means that the heat dissipation ability.In addition, there is a periodic reference standard as an auxiliary judgment. For towing vehicles that are transported long distances on plains all year round, it is recommended to replace the rear axle gear oil every 100000 kilometers. Mining dump trucks and heavy-duty side flip trailers operate under full load and bumps for a long time, and the gear oil loss rate is faster. It should be shortened to 50-60000 kilometers for inspection and replacement. If vehicles frequently drive through flooded roads in areas with frequent rainy seasons, the rear axle half shaft oil seal is prone to water ingress and emulsification. Even if the mileage does not reach the standard value, the gear oil condition should be checked regularly. Many overseas fleets have a misconception that as long as the gear oil does not leak, it will not be replaced for a long time. Little do they know that the gear oil will be subjected to high temperature compression for a long time, and the internal anti-wear additives will gradually be exhausted, gradually losing their protective ability. By the time there is obvious abnormal noise in the rear axle, the gears often have irreversible wear, and the maintenance cost far exceeds the cost of oil replacement. The overall maintenance logic is very simple. During daily maintenance, a small amount of gear oil is extracted to check its color and texture. Combined with driving conditions and mileage, the replacement time is determined comprehensively. For heavy-duty vehicles in mining areas, the oil change cycle is appropriately shortened to prevent the use of inferior gear oil in the rear axle. This can not only extend the service life of the differential and half axle gears, but also avoid sudden failures of the rear axle that may cause the fleet to stop working. It is very suitable for the maintenance environment of remote overseas construction sites.
