During the operation of heavy trucks, problems such as steering wheel sinking, difficult steering, and slow return occur. Most overseas fleets will directly determine it as a steering gear failure and blindly replace the assembly, resulting in unnecessary high maintenance costs. In fact, the vast majority of heavy steering faults are not caused by damage to the steering gear body, but by abnormal peripheral auxiliary components, chassis parameters, and oil conditions. Following the troubleshooting logic from simple to complex, starting with low-cost peripheral components can accurately solve most of the steering heavy problems and avoid excessive maintenance.
Firstly, check the status of the steering assist oil and the oil pipeline. Deterioration, lack of oil, and mixing of impurities are the primary causes of steering sinking. Long term failure to change the oil can lead to viscous oil, poor lubrication flow, insufficient power assist pressure, and directly increase steering resistance. At the same time, flattening, blockage, and air intake of the oil pipe can cause unstable assist pressure and result in light to heavy jamming. In daily life, simply check whether the oil level is standard, whether the oil is black or turbid, replace the compliant power assist oil in a timely manner, and check and clear the pipeline to quickly restore the steering lightness.
Check the working status of the power steering pump. The power pump is the core that provides steering power. Wear and tear of the pump body, insufficient pressure, and belt slippage can cause the power output to not keep up, resulting in normal no-load steering and significant sinking of the steering direction under heavy load. Many times, the booster pump is not completely damaged, only due to loose belts, slipping, and clogged filters. You can first adjust the belt tension and clean the pump body filter screen. If the fault is not eliminated, then check the pressure of the power pump without directly replacing the expensive steering gear assembly.
Focus on inspecting the front wheel alignment and walking components of the chassis. Deviation in toe in data and abnormal tilt angle of the main pin can increase the driving resistance of the vehicle and cause the steering wheel to continue to sink. At the same time, the lack of oil and rust on the vertical shaft, wear and jamming of the pressure bearing, and excessive tightening of the front wheel hub bearing will significantly increase mechanical resistance, manifested as heavy steering and weak return. Driving on rough roads and long-term heavy load bumps on construction sites can easily cause misalignment of chassis parameters. By maintaining, lubricating, and correcting positioning parameters, the problem can be solved.
Check the tire pressure and front wheel load condition. Low tire pressure and uneven tire pressure on both front axles of heavy-duty trucks can increase the frictional resistance of tire contact with the ground, making low-speed steering particularly difficult. Long term overloading and uneven front loading can put pressure on the front wheels, exacerbating the steering heaviness. Calibrating tire pressure and standardizing loading before daily driving is the simplest but most easily overlooked solution.
In summary, heavy trucks have heavy steering and only a few have steering gear failures. The core causes are abnormal oil pipelines, power pumps, chassis mechanical resistance, and tire pressure parameters. When overseas fleets encounter such faults, priority should be given to troubleshooting low-cost peripheral components and avoiding blind replacement of steering gears. This can quickly solve the problem and effectively reduce vehicle maintenance costs.
